As shockwaves rippled throughout the NFL system, the very legitimacy of one of the league's most popular teams and their star quarterback began to erode, even as the Patriots and Brady went on to win that year's Super Bowl. As evidence began to build, however, a full on NFL investigation was launched, exploding an unsubstantiated rumor into an intense scandal that would lead news coverage for weeks. In January 2015, rumors circulated that the New England Patriots - a team long suspected of abiding by the if you ain't cheating you ain't trying philosophy - had used under-inflated footballs in their playoff victory against the Indianapolis Colts. The thrilling behind-the-scenes account of how the NFL's most sensational scandal culminated in sports history's greatest comeback, featuring dozens of exclusive interviews with Patriots players - including Tom Brady himself. Honestly, it's still amusing even to me as an adult. If the child likes plays on words, they will likely find this to be hilarious. Really, I cannot recommend this one enough. This was the story that got the "again, again!" that night. Then we went with my choice… and much to my delight she was laughing so hard I actually had to catch her as she almost rolled off her bed. That night at story time, my daughter instantly went for the book she chose. I had never seen the original artwork, and while it wasn't what I remembered, I found it charming and of course picked it up. I loved how the character took every word literally, and while it was very funny, it ingrained in kid Tim a knowledge that words could be taken multiple ways (something of a complex thought at 3 or 4). When I was a kid this was one of my favorite books. The 50th anniversary edition with the original artwork and I was instantly transported back. This way whatever her current interest is, she can keep it going and I can pick out something that (a) won't frustrait me to reread over and over and also (b) sometimes recapture something I remember reading as a child or at least pick something that I think may make her think a bit more than some of her choices. We usually have a system to this as it is a big treat to go to book store, usually she picks out a book and I pick out one. So, I was strolling through Barnes and Noble with my daughter, looking for a new story time book. There’s plenty going on, but some of it does feel somewhat forced. Yes, because Stone of Farewell feels bogged down in plot. Ask me if I’m disappointed, my answer would be a vague ‘yes and no’. This review doesn’t flow as easily from brain to fingers to keyboard as the last one did. It’s taken a while to read, almost twice the time it took for The Dragonbone Chair, which is a longer novel. Stone of Farewell was, I’m saddened to say, the reason I didn’t continue with the series overblown books like this were why I fell out with fantasy and didn’t pick up another for many years. From what I could remember, Stone of Farewell was 800+ pages of history and legend – backstory, if you will – interspersed with the journeys of our heroes on their way to meet at the titular location. There are exceptions – the movie Empire Strikes Back and Joe Abercrombie’s Before They Are Hanged spring to mind – but I didn’t think this book was going to be one of them. Sequels can often fall into the trap of the law of diminishing returns not quite as good as the first one, sometimes a huge disappointment. After being overwhelmingly impressed with The Dragonbone Chair, I was a little reluctant to pick up its sequel, Stone of Farewell. I will say this, her style appears to be unique enough that it is consistent across translators which speaks to the force of her personality. AMRITA is about an atypical family where one of the daughters committed suicide. For example, GOODBYE TSUGUMI is the book about two cousins at an inn and one of them is dying. Often I find that I only remember the hook of her books and forget all the rest. They are wistful and full of emotion, but they also aren't grounded and they tend to be pretty forgettable. Here's the thing about Banana Yoshimoto's works. Things get complicated when she meets the two children of the author and the woman who was the inspiration for the author's twisted and depressive work. The heroine, Kazami, is acquainted with the book because her boyfriend, Shoji, was one of the casualties. It's about this cursed work of Japanese literature that was written in English and everyone who tries to translate it into Japanese ends up killing themselves (TW). It's a shame because the premise is so cool. I made it to the end of NP but I wasn't really impressed by this one, either. The last book I read was GOODBYE TSUGUMI and I wasn't impressed. I went through a pretty big Banana Yoshimoto phase in high school and when I found all my old books in the garage, I definitely wanted to give them a reread because I remembered liking them so much. So I'm doing a project where I reread books from my adolescence to see how they hold up.
